Smoking Or Living A Happy Life?

In our world today where the trend of fitness is starting to grow, smoking is a big “NO!” But, for those whose habit of smoking is already engraved in their blood, it is very difficult to stop. For them, it is a stimulant, a stress reliever, and their way of coping up with modern society. But, the benefits you get from smoking are far less than the dangers it bring. It does not matter if you are thin or fat or with an athletic built. All body types are at risk.
How grave the effect of smoking is to your body depends on your state of health, the type of tobacco you smoke, its form, its burning temperature, and how long you had been smoking. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, males lose more or less 13 years of their lifespan while an average of 14.5 years is lost in females. It causes damage to the respiratory, cardiovascular and digestive system.
Substances from cigarette can cause irritation and disturbs bronchial passages which results to the lungs being filled with mucus. Smoking causes disturbance in the action of cilia or small-hair like projections. Cilia are responsible in expelling mucus which contains bacteria and other irritants. Due to inhaled smoke, cilia do not function well, thus, trapping the mucus and bacteria inside the lungs. The trapped bacteria may lead to bronchitis or emphysema which causes breathing difficult. It may also lead to heart damage.
Smoking’s bad effect is not limited to bronchitis and emphysema. Among the most fatal diseases are cancer of the lung, larynx (voice box), oral cavity, pharynx (throat), esophagus (swallowing tube connected to the stomach), or bladder. It may also contribute to the development of cancers of the pancreas, cervix, kidney, or stomach.
Smoking may be addictive. It may make you look cool. It does help you cope up with stress. But, are these benefits enough to make you choose smoking than living a healthy life? Is it worth risking your life?
