The cartomizer or atomizer is powered by the battery, and the triggering mechanism can be manual or automatic. In the automatic version the person just needs to take a drag and the activation will be automatic.

In a cartomizer the heating element is constructed inside the cartridge, and this is more convenient for the user, as he can discard the cartomizer when it is used up. A cartridge however will only hold the e-liquid, and the user has to take care of the atomizer as it will be reused many times when only the cartridge will be replaced.

The two part system with the cartomizer is preferable as you do not require much of maintenance. The system having three parts is also nice but it just needs a bit of extra adjustments.
